Billable Hours started in 2018.

Jeff (guitar) was photographing a wedding, and Darren (drums) called him out of the blue. While catching up about music, they had an idea — get the band back together.

They started playing as a duo, until Thomas joined (bass).

Darren met Eugene (keyboards) at their daughters’ school, and he joined soon after.

In 2019, Darren met Steffi (vocals) through one of her colleagues. To this day, they’re surprised she keeps coming to rehearsal.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, everything changed, even the lineup. Sean (bass) originally joined as a sub for one gig, and became a permanent member in lockdown.

Steffi Chan

Lead Singer, Tambourine, Cowbell

Steffi Chan grew up in Walnut, California, serenaded by her mom singing her favorites like Yesterday, Unchained Melody, and Summertime, in her deep, soulful voice. Steffi was inspired by her mom’s talent, her home infused with a love of music, and artists like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Aretha Franklin. Steffi has performed in countless shower concerts for unwitting neighbors, and her passion for karaoke at work functions led a colleague to introduce her to Billable Hours. The rest is history.

Jeff Nakahara

Lead Guitar, Backup Vocals

Started playing guitar, 1st musical instrument at age 20, learned mostly rock and blues. Played lead in indie rock band. Influences: Radiohead, Hendrix, funk. Original BH member with D-schultzinator. Removed amps from equation. Everything is an emulation. Bends to the fifth and misses too much. Can only fake jazz in keys G and C. Vocally worse than the sound heard in his head, but sang in choir at Christian school during which time Jesus was his best friend.

Eugene Wang

Keyboards, Vocals, Guitar

Eugene hails from Memphis, Tennessee where he spent his formative years listening to a multitude of musical genres spanning R&B, country, pop and rock. Although he sang in a traveling a capella group while in high school, he didn’t discover his interest in instruments until much later in life. As an adult, he began learning to play the guitar and years later, realized he could play guitar chords on the piano. Since then, he has continued his learning by experimenting with different playing styles by ear, as he does not read music. Often on the road, you may find Eugene fighting jet lag in piano bars from Paris to New York City.

Darren Schulte

Drums, Backup Vocals

Darren has been playing drums since he was a teenager living in LA. He thought that drums would be key to playing gigs on the Sunset Strip rather than the clarinet, his first instrument. Since leaving college, Darren has played in several rock and indie bands around the Bay Area, keeping his professional musician dreams alive. Darren started Billable Hours with Jeff in 2018 to bring rock, soul, R&B, and country hits to bars and events everywhere.

Sean Carmichael

Bass, Backup Vocals

Sean is a lifelong musician and has been an electric bass player for over 20 years. His early music career included playing jazz bass in and around the Chicago area, singing in a touring boy choir, playing classical piano, and more. After moving to the Bay Area, he played in jazz groups until joining Billable Hours in early 2020.
